A Legacy of Experience

Bob H. Joyce has been one of Kern County's most pre-eminent and sought after business litigators for nearly 40 years.  He is a passionate and incisive advocate, and is particularly known for cutting through unnecessary complexity in cases, to reveal simpler and more just solutions for his clients.  This is only possible with patient and thorough legal scholarship and an innate ability to explain difficult concepts to judges and juries.  Mr. Joyce's skills in these areas have earned him the respect and acclaim of judges and lawyers throughout Central and Southern California. Mr. Joyce has tried a diverse range of cases involving bank and insurance fraud, real estate transactional disputes, wrongful termination and discrimination, and environmental disputes.  In recent years, Mr. Joyce has focused his practice on agricultural and water-related issues, in particular resource and land use disputes between urban and rural interests.

His significant cases have included:
  • successfully representing local agricultural farmers in litigation to uphold Kern County's ordinance banning the importation of Southern California sludge into Kern County
  • prosecuting quiet title actions involving ground water rights, and the competing interests of the agricultural user and metropolitan purveyors
  • successfully defending a municipality in protracted and complex municipal bond litigation
  • securing a 12-0 jury verdict in favor of a national insurance company in less than one hour after a four-week jury trial. Mr. Joyce is a lifelong Kern County resident

After serving in the military abroad, Mr. Joyce attending the University of California Berkeley on a debate scholarship, graduating in the top 10 percent of his class in 1975.  In 1978, while at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, he was selected to be a member of the trial advocacy team which finished third in the nation.
